PARENTS at Charles Anderson Primary School at Ongwediva in the Oshana region are demanding the immediate closure of the school after two pupils’ parents allegedly tested positive for Covid-19.
The affected parents are said to be nurses at the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital.
A concerned parent claims the two parents alerted the school immediately after testing positive, but the school management tried to hide the information while allowing the two affected pupils to continue going to school.
“We want to know how many children were in contact with these pupils and how many of them could have been infected. We are also concerned about why the school is hiding this information from us. This is pure negligence. Today, there was a parents’ meeting at the school, but nothing about the positive cases. The school must close down indefinitely,” the parent said.
Oshana education director Hileni Amukana rubbished the claims saying only one parent tested positive for Covid-19, and the parent’s child is in self-isolation.
Amukana said the school cannot close down because a parent tested positive.
“Those are mere allegations. We have taken note of the positive case reported and the parent had alerted the school. The parent who tested positive is not part of the school, hence we cannot close down the school. The child is in self-isolation. A swab test was conducted on the pupil and we are still waiting for the results. Only after the results are out, we can make a decision. For now, lessons will continue as normal,” she said.
Amukana said several pupils at different schools are direct contacts of parents who have tested positive for Covid-19, but none of those schools have closed.
Amukana said no pupil at Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo Secondary School and Ompandakani Combined School are direct contacts of parents who had tested positive.
“No school is going to close down due to parents who had tested positive to Covid-19 in the region,” she said.
