ERONGO police commander commissioner Andreas Nelumbu has announced a directive to stop issuing of travel permits out of the region, to contain the spread of Covid-19.

“There will be no travel permits issued by the police throughout the region until further notice,” said the commissioner on Sunday afternoon.

Nelumbu also urged the public to strictly observe the safety measures put in place by the government, which include staying at home, and limiting unnecessary movements at all times.

The region’s community affairs commander Ileni Shapumba added that the public should not expect security forces to be out patrolling the streets to enforce the lockdown regulations as the force is stretched to the limit.

“The same law enforcement officers that are supposed to be on the streets are the ones guarding the quarantine facilities, they are the ones manning the roadblocks, controlling the movement of the people.

“People should not fear the law enforcement officers. They should not expect to see us on the street in order to do the right thing. Coronavirus is teaching us to do the right thing even when no one is monitoring us. People must take responsibility,” said Shapumba.
