President Hage Geingob says global travel bans and vaccine apartheid are not sustainable and were not about saving lives.
“We call for an end to the unnecessary travel bans. We should come together as one,” Geingob said at the 37th Covid-19 briefing at State House, which he is currently addressing.
Geingob also announced that the presence of the Omicron Covid-19 variant in the country has been confirmed.
Namibia has identified 18 cases of the new Omicron Covid-19 variant. Health minister Kalumbi Shangula said evidence suggests that it spreads faster and that they are seeing more re-infections with multiple mutations.
Health minister Kalumbi Shangula said Omicron is the dominant variant in Namibia.
Preliminary results show that Omicron is milder and there is therefore less pressure on Namibia’s health system.
“Cases are going up, but admissions are low,” he said.
