ECN chairperson Notemba Tjipueja reiterated that the commission was well within the ambits of the law to use the electronic voting machines without the voters verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) technology in the upcoming presidential and National Assembly elections.

Tjipueja said the ECN has valid reasons why they opted not to introduce the VVPAT technology, saying that the technology at the moment “has a lot of irretrievable errors”.

She made these remarks in an interview with the media following the dismissal of an urgent application filed by independent presidential candidate Panduleni Itula who challenged the use of the EVMs at Wednesday’s national polls.
