Namibia has recorded 107 new coronavirus infections, with 268 fresh recoveries from the virus, the Ministry of Health and Social Services’ executive director, Ben Nangombe, said on Friday.

Windhoek reported 82 new infections, Swakopmund six, Walvis Bay five, Rundu seven and Okahandja two, while one infection was recorded at Katima Mulilo, Gobabis, Rehoboth, Mariental and Karasburg each.

“We are still seeing cases coming from crowded places,” Nangombe said. “Of 82 cases reported from Windhoek today, 55 (67%) are inmates from Windhoek Correctional Facility. Again out of seven reported from Rundu, six are inmates from police holding cells,” he said.

The recoveries consist of 260 from the Khomas region, five from Erongo, two from Hardap and one in Ohangwena.

Nangombe reminded Namibians not to relax and forget about preventative measures, saying Covid-19 has not left.

The country has so far recorded 11 470 confirmed novel coronavirus infections and 123 deaths linked to Covid-19. With 9 351 people having recovered after they contracted the virus, Namibia still has 2 006 active infections.
