The Ministry of Health and Social Services announced 150 deaths linked to the coronavirus, 1 941 new infections, and 1 513 new recoveries on Tuesday.
The age range is from nine months to 101-years-old.
“This is the highest number of deaths announced in a single day. However, it should be noted that they are distributed over a specific period as follows: 12 died during the reporting period (24 hours); 93 died between 1-11 July, while 45 died in June,” the ministry noted.
Gobabis recorded the highest number of fatalities with 34 deaths in total. This is followed by Oshakati with 33, Windhoek with 17, Grootfontein with 11, Onandjokwe with eight, Rundu and Engela with seven each, Tsumeb with five, Katima Mulilo, Swakopmund, and Oshikuku with four each, Walvis Bay, Okakarara, Okahao, Opuwo, Otjiwarongo, and Outjo with two each, and Khorixas, Eenhana, Rehoboth and Usakos with one each.
According to the ministry, 129 of the deceased had not been vaccinated with only one reportedly having received their first dose of the vaccine, while the vaccination status of 20 could not be established.
The Otjozondjupa region reported the highest number of cases (101), of which 49 are from Otjiwarongo, 21 from Okakarara, 16 from Okahandja and 15 from Grootfontein. Other towns which recorded a high number of new cases include Windhoek (94), Oshakati (87), Rundu (78), Lüderitz (58) and Eenhana (47).
“Among the confirmed cases are 78 pupils, 18 teachers and 14 students from different institutions. We are also reporting 29 healthcare workers from different health care facilities and 11 employees from mining industries,” the ministry said.
Of all confirmed cases, 16 (2%) reported to have received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and one is fully vaccinated, the ministry added.
The country’s hospitals on Tuesday had 551 patients with Covid-19 admitted for treatment, with 111 patients in intensive care units (ICUs).
Thus far, 31 833 people have been fully inoculated against the virus, while 132 784 people have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine.
