The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the //Kharas region now stands at 35, while 13 people who had the novel coronavirus in the region have recovered.
//Kharas governor Aletha Frederick said this while delivering her maiden state of the region address at Keetmanshoop on Wednesday.
Frederick said inter-regional and cross-district migrations of people are the main factors contributing to the spread and transmission of the novel coronavirus disease in the region.
She said the construction of a 12-bed isolation unit was completed at Keetmanshoop recently, and screening and testing facilities, each with four beds, are also under construction at the southern border post villages of Noordoewer and Ariamsvlei.
The Anglo American Foundation is funding the construction and testing facilities at the border post villages, said Frederick.
According to the governor, an intensive care unit (ICU) for Covid-19 patients valued at N$1,3 million is under construction in the region and is 60% completed.
Frederick welcomed the recommendation that outbreak response thematic committees be established at district and regional levels to curb the coronavirus outbreak.
She said there was a need to strengthen surveillance activities at public and private health facilities, and screening at ports of entry in the region.
